Trial by jury forms a central pillar of the right to a fair trial, serving as a check against state power and an inherent guarantee enshrined as a right to be judged by one's peers.  12 is the story of twelve Russian jurors deciding the fate of a Chechen teenager accused of murdering his stepfather.  Set against a backdrop of conflict and racism, 12 reveals how the principles of justice itself are called into play and the jurors find themselves battling their own prejudices to deliver the verdict.
