New Appointment for Professor O'Flaherty

19 May 2011

HRLC Co-Director Professor Michael O'Flaherty has been appointed to the “Foreign Secretary’s Advisory Group on Human Rights: Sub Group on Torture Prevention”. This is one of three sub-groups of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) Advisory Group on Human Rights, established in late 2010. Torture prevention is a key priority in the UK Government’s human rights policy at home and overseas. In March 2011, the FCO published  new guidance for its overseas staff on how to report torture or mistreatment that they encounter in the course of their daily duties. The Sub-Group on Torture Prevention will provide advice to the Foreign Secretary on key issues and events as they unfold. With this appointment, Professor O’Flaherty is now on the human rights advisory bodies of both the UK and Irish foreign ministries.
