Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC) Summer School

The Human Rights Law Centre is offering a new Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC) Summer School.

Aimed at qualified lawyers in the armed forces, this one-week course offers a comprehensive background in the Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC), focusing on both State and individual responsibility in the use of military force and the conduct of military operations.

The course will cover the law governing inter- and infra-state hostilities, including the rules governing war crimes and crimes against humanity and the rules governing the conduct of military occupations. The course also examines the limitation upon resort to armed force, the role of the UN Security Council and UN peacekeeping operations.

Method and Objectives

The course will draw upon the practical experiences of the participants and engage them in problem-solving exercises and interactive discussions. By the end of the week, participants will have the necessary tools to provide legal advice in military situations.

The course will be led by Professor Nigel White and delivered by leading international lawyers and practitioners in the area of Law of Armed Conflict.
