Stage 2
'Germination' Stage
At this stage, the participants' awareness is developing further – activities from the first stage become rooted, and new developments are introduced. The second stage of the certification programme covers topics such as energy, recycling, waste management, and greener travel.
Participation

The Environmental Champion in the Department/School has received solicited feedback from the members in the Department/School about green issues.

The Department/School has a designated section on their staff intranet for posting tips and information about green practices, events, and groups.
Energy

Participants use desk lamps with energy saving light bulbs. ─ Tip: Learn more about energy saving light bulbs.

When occupancy sensors exist in offices without manual switches, the Department/School contacts Estate Office to set the sensors to turn our lights off after shorter time periods.

The Department/School has examined the use of networked printers and other electronic devices, and contacted IS about consolidating use where it makes sense.

During cold weather, participants ensure all of the windows are shut tightly.
Recycling

All Department/School offices are equipped with an Office Paper Recycling Station. ─ Tip: Email the Estate Office at sustainability@nottingham.ac.uk to order paper recycle bins.
Waste management

The Department/School has a designated area for sharing office supplies that can be reused (file folders, binders, pens, paper clips, etc.).

There is at least one reusable bag in the kitchen or break room for staff to use in place of plastic bags when shopping or buying lunch, supplies, etc.

The Department/School contacts catalogue distributors to receive fewer publications.
