Language options in the Department of Classics

The Department of Classics gives you the opportunity to study the classical languages as part of your course.

Options are available for all levels of language ability and prior achievement; requirements vary depending on your course.

Using the information in the tables, please indicate on the form below the option/s you intend to take in your first year and the level of language you have achieved.

Please submit the form by  September 14 2015.

Latin or Greek?

Guidance on choosing your language option/s:
For those with GCSE or little/no knowledge of Greek 
Beginners Greek An introduction to the grammar and vocabulary of classical Greek; no previous knowledge is assumed. Emphasis is placed on acquiring the ability to read Greek; the basis of the course is the study and translation of passages adapted from classical Greek texts 
For those with GCSE or little/no knowledge of Latin
Beginners Latin  An introduction to the grammar and vocabulary of classical Latin; no previous knowledge is assumed. Emphasis is placed on acquiring the ability to analyse and understand basic Latin. 
For those with A level Greek (or similar)
Greek Texts  This module studies a Greek literary text and begins the systematic revision of grammar. This module reinforces students’ knowledge of the Greek language and develops their ability to read Greek with fluency and understanding. 
For those with A level Latin (or similar)
Latin Texts This module studies a Latin literary text and begins the systematic revision of grammar. The module reinforces students’ knowledge of the Latin language and develops students’ ability to read Latin with fluency and understanding.
