Geographic challenges

It can be hard to find your way round a new city or new country, but it is important to remember that many new students feel lost when they first arrive at university. The University of Nottingham is a big place with different campuses so it is likely that it will take you a while to familiarise yourself with your new surroundings.


The challenges

There are a number of geographical challenges you will encounter when you first start at university:

  • finding accommodation
  • making travel arrangements
  • getting used to the size of campus and finding your way around
  • locating where your classes take place
  • finding your way round a new city or country
  • getting used to the culture of a new country

The University offers a number of support services and resources to help you get used to your new surroundings.

How to overcome the challenges

There are a number of things you can do to overcome the geographic challenges you will face:

  • familiarise yourself with the campus map
  • do a campus tour and take note of relevant locations
  • ask for directions if required
  • seek out information on the city of Nottingham
  • familiarise yourself with relevant tram, train and bus routes and timetables
