 |
Since its inception in 1994 as
a centre for research in bacterial pathogenicity, the Institute
has continually grown and evolved, emerging in 2003, following
external reviews of research in the Faculty Medicine & Health
Sciences and in the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences with a
greatly expanded mission. The achievements of the last ten years
have been well reflected in multiple programme and project grants,
fellowships and Co-operative Groups and in publication outputs
especially in the fields of bacterial cell-to-cell communication
(“quorum sensing”) and Helicobacter pylori pathogenicity. |
 |
By complementing the Institute’s
existing strengths in molecular bacteriology through adoption
of research groups with interests in host responses to micro-organisms
(viruses, bacteria and parasites) and their products, mucosal
biology, antimicrobial chemotherapy, cancer immunity, allergy
and inflammation, we hope to build a substantial multidisciplinary
research centre capable of making a major international impact
across all its fields of operation. |
 |
To achieve this aim, the III now embraces a broad
membership drawn from multiple Schools (including Pharmacy, Molecular
Medical Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Medical & Surgical
Sciences, Biosciences and Biology) who collectively possess a
wide spectrum of overlapping research interests. |
