Jason Tomlinson

38, studying a BSc Honours in BioChemistry

I left school at 16 with no qualifications and became a submariner with the Royal Navy for five years. Then I worked in a factory – the same as everybody did where I lived – that was a normal way of life. I’ve always thought I could do better. Studying has given me the confidence to know I can do something with my life and fulfil my ambitions. I’d like to become a teacher, although I’m open to other possibilities. The bursary has made a massive difference, particularly with travel expenses and books. When you have a family to support, money is always tight. None of my family knows anything about University life, nobody from where I live goes to University, and so if I’m struggling, it’s good to know I have support to help me continue.
