University staff supporting the Campaign

At Nottingham we are proud that the philanthropic gifts we receive are used to benefit the lives of so many people, from our students on campus to poor communities in the developing world. This is due to the crucial support we receive every day from our alumni, our friends and from large numbers of our dedicated staff.

Staff giving is an important component of any university fundraising campaign and Impact: The Nottingham Campaign is no different. Apart from the more obvious ways of donating staff have a number of additional mechanisms. If you wish to make a donation to one of our projects all you have to do is select your preferred method of giving from the options below and then let us know where you want your gift to be directed – you can keep your support quite general or choose an area on campus you care most about, or indeed pick from the list of Campaign priorities.

Why I Give

I work in the University’s Post Room and I didn’t know until I was 45 that I had dyslexia. Goodness knows what my life could have been like had it been diagnosed earlier. So I had to enter higher education as a 45-year-old mature student. I graduated in Sociology and Social Policy in 2010 and in my eyes I am very proud to say that I have earned the right to call The University of Nottingham my University.

The University was a godsend to me. I had great support from the staff and fellow students, who much younger than me, cheered loudly when I walked across the stage on graduation day. Even though my wife and I have limited income I just wanted to give something back for the little bit I’d taken out.

My job is in the Campaign Office as a Student Administrator and my motivations for supporting the University include knowing that I am helping to fund group run volunteering projects that enhance the student experience and also the local community.

Donations like mine are what keep the University in the top 1% and this makes me proud to be involved. Not only that, I like feeling that I have given something back, to show my gratitude for having a job within the University as well being on a great Art History degree course.

I took up office as the University’s sixth Vice-Chancellor in October 2008 and I am unashamedly proud of our University. I recently completed the second University Life Cycle, riding over 1,100 miles the length of the country in 14 days with 11 of my colleagues. Choosing the right cause was imperative to keep us motivated for so long and we picked the work of Nottingham Potential because education has the power to transform lives and benefit the whole of society. Like the Sue Ryder Centre for Research on Palliative and End of Life Care in the first year of the Life Cycle, its work has the potential to touch the lives of so many people. Our efforts have now raised more than £500,000 over the two rides and I’m grateful to so many of you for your very generous support of the Life Cycle team.

My wife Susan and I also support the Vaughan Parry Williams Coaching Fund. By providing funding for the provision of coaching, we can enhance the overall student sporting experience, raise aspirations, improve inclusivity and hopefully produce a new raft of talented coaches.

I know that you are just as proud of our University as I am and, hopefully, you will join me in supporting Impact: The Nottingham Campaign with a gift at whatever level you feel is appropriate.

How you can make an Impact

There are four main ways you can choose to support the University:

Regular giving is the best way to support Nottingham. It helps us to plan our work more effectively and know that we have a flexible and reliable income we can always count on.

One simple way of supporting University projects regularly is to establish a monthly Direct Debit. With the addition of Gift Aid your monthly gift will be worth 25% more at no extra cost to you. Alternatively, you can make a single gift, but whichever you prefer you can be sure that every penny of your donation will have a tangible and lasting impact on the lives of so many people.

You can set up a regular Direct Debit by downloading the Staff Donation Form and returning to the Campaign Office (Ground Floor, Pope Building, University Park). Alternatively, please contact the Regular Giving team on extention 13627 (or 0115 951 13627 from outside the University).

Payroll Giving is your chance to support the University by donating money directly from your salary. This method of giving comes straight out of your gross salary and therefore provides a really tax efficient way to donate.

You need to register online via Charitable Giving, an HMRC approved Payroll Giving Agency, who will do the necessary administration to activate your regular gift.

This can take a little time and so don’t worry if your donation doesn’t come out of your next pay packet.

Early detection is the missing piece in the jigsaw to increase survival rates for many solid cancers. It is the holy grail in cancer treatment.

The University of Nottingham.

There are already over 500 University of Nottingham staff generously supporting Small Change Big Impact. As a member of staff, you too can sign up to round your net pay down to the nearest pound each month and donate the pennies to an Impact project.

In 2012 the pennies collected from pay packets resulted in an average of £300 a month being donated to HeartLight, helping to save the lives of newborn babies every month.

Staff donations through the Small Change Big Impact scheme in 2013 will support the University’s research into the early detection of cancer.

Cancer: Early Detection will have a genuine impact on the quality of life of patients in the UK and worldwide and will save more people who might otherwise die from cancer.

To support this cause log into the staff Intranet Portal, select the 'Other Services’ tab and click on the green 'Check Status' button.

Staff who are already signed up to Small Change Big Impact need take no action as their pennies will automatically be redirected to Cancer: Early Detection.

A Gift in your Will to remember a charitable cause could be the most significant gift you ever make. For many of us the University becomes a hugely important part of our lives. Many current and former members of staff have chosen to support their academic school or department, a hall of residence, a specific research field or a particular group of students. A legacy gift to the University ensures that the impact of your support continues after you have gone.

If you are considering making or changing your Will, and you would like to consider a gift to Nottingham, please download a copy of our dedicated brochure on PDF. Alternatively please email Andrew Wright or call him on +44 (0)115 951 3664.

Your support for our University really will make a lifetime of difference.

For more information about Staff Giving please email the University's Regular Giving team or call them on +44 (0) 115 951 3627.
