Dato Prof. Dr. Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hasan Shahabudin

Vice-Chancellor, Universiti Kebangsan Malaysia

Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hasan Shahabudin is an exemplary figure in the development of medical and higher education in Malaysia. She is credited for the development of the quality assurance framework for all qualifications in Malaysia. As Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), she has developed a transformation plan for UKM, introduced the commercialization of research products and initiated innovative programmes for human capital development. She has admirably combined her social activist work as President of the National Council of Women’s Organisation (NCWO) to strengthen community engagement projects at UKM.

Benoy’s iconic retail design has been named ‘the best in Asia’ at MIPIM Asia for the last three consecutive years with Elements in Hong Kong, ION Orchard in Singapore and Shanghai IFC Mall in China. Benoy is a top 10 UK design brand with schemes that are redefining the built environment from Helsinki to Hanoi.

Graham sits on the Asia Task Force, the Middle East Task Force, Catalyst UK, and the Boards of the China Britain Business Council and UK India Council. Graham is a Non-Executive Director of Nottingham Forest FC and an Ambassador for the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts. Graham and his wife Jo Founded and Co-Chair the Benoy Foundation, a grant-making charitable trust supporting community, building and education initiatives in the UK and around the world.

A decade ago, multi-award winning British Architect and Design firm Benoy took a decision to internationalise its proven expertise. Benoy won a project to design a 85,000m² retail mall situated atop Kowloon's Mass Transit Railway Station in Hong Kong, and established an office to service the scheme. Benoy now has eight offices worldwide and is contributing to the development of the future city across Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Benoy’s landmark schemes include Bluewater in Kent, the Bullring in Birmingham, Westfield London, the iconic Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, ION Orchard in Singapore and Shanghai ifc mall in China.

Tan Sri Dato’ Lodin bin Wok Kamaruddin, 61, has been the Chief Executive of Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (LTAT) since August 1982 and the Group Managing Director and Deputy Chairman of Boustead Holdings Berhad since 1 July 1991 and 3 March 2010 respectively. He is also the Deputy Chairman of Affin Holdings Berhad since 1 July 2008.

Datuk Prof. Dr. Roziah Binti Omar

Director, Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT) 

Prof Roziah Omar obtained her Bachelors degree in Arts and Social Sciences from the University of Malaya in 1980 and her Masters from Ohio University in 1982. In 1987 she acquired another Masters from the University of Berkeley California and her PhD from the same university in 1992. Her areas of speciality are social development, poverty, reproductive health, and women’s studies. She has also done active post-doctoral research in the field of gerontology, social health and social policy. She has done research and actively published in these fields and has extensively written in journals, chapters in books, monograph and international books.

In 2002 Prof. Roziah was appointed Dean of Institute of Postgraduate Studies in University of Malaya and participated in several meetings and conferences relating to intervarsity cooperation and networking and the internationalisation of University of Malaya. She was Chairperson of the Meeting of Council of Postgraduate Deans, at the 8th IPTA Postgraduate Management Meeting at University of Malaya in 2002. In 2004, she was seconded and appointed Director of the Institut Social Malaysia (ISM) a training and research institute within the Ministry of Women, Family and Development. Here, she developed a collaborative research network with the Department of Social Work of the University of Berkeley, California and extended ISM’s links with important research institutions within the region and internationally. She also revitalised ISM’s distinguished fellowship programme by making significant appointments with key researchers and scholars from the national, regional and international academia in the areas of social welfare and policy.

 

In 2006 Prof. Roziah was appointed Executive Director of the Asia-Europe Institute of the University of Malaya. Here she focused her efforts in enhancing the contributions of the Institute through post-graduate studies, global research, international networking and publications. The Institute runs several International Masters programmes by course work in various fields of studies and Ph.D programme by thesis linked to several faculties with the University of Malaya.

 

Presently, she is the Director of Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT), Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia. In AKEPT, her main task is to strategically formulate and implement capacity building and organization development programs to build and enhance leadership in the areas of educational leadership including in research and innovation and teaching and learning.

Prior to joining Serco, Ken started his career with KPMG and then worked for almost fourteen years at the University of Warwick, most recently as Deputy Registrar. He has worked in or led a wide range of service areas including Governance and Assurance, Student Services, Campus Support Services, Recruitment and Admissions, Warwick Graduate School, Academic Services, Strategic Planning and HR. He has extensive experience of managing change and restructuring. In all areas he has been responsible for new service development and delivery.

Ken has chaired project groups overseeing the planning and implementation of major capital projects including new student residences and the redevelopment of the student and cultural facilities on campus. He has been a key player in building strategic partnerships most notably through the National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth and the Birmingham Warwick Science City Programme. He was the Founding Director of IGGY (the International Gateway for Gifted Youth) developing programmes within the UK, Singapore, South Africa and Botswana.

Ken is active in all phases of education and has a particular interest in gifted & talented education and widening participation. He was Chair of a large secondary school in Coventry and supported its transition into an Academy. He has been active in establishing five Trust School partnerships, serving as Chair of one of the Trusts.

He received the Ted Wragg Award for Sustained Contribution to Education Journalism in 2010, part of the Education Journalist of the Year Awards, run by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations. He was commended as a finalist for the Award for Outstanding Education Reporting for National Journalists in 2007. In the same year, he was a runner-up for the annual Paul Foot Award for Campaigning Journalism, run by The Guardian newspaper and Private Eye magazine. He also made the longlist for this award in its inaugural year, 2005.

In 2011, Times Higher Education was named Weekly Magazine of the Year and Media Brand of the Year (business category) by the Professional Publishers' Association.

Phil is a regular speaker at international conferences, contributing in 2011 to events organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the World Bank, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, British Council and others. Phil writes regularly on rankings for leading newspapers, and in May 2011, he contributed a chapter to the book, Blue Skies: new thinking about the future of higher education (Pearson).

Phil, who was educated at Hookergate Comprehensive School in Tyne and Wear, has a history degree from King’s College London, and a postgraduate diploma in journalism from City University London.

Born in Australia, Craig has lived in the UK for 24 years.

He is a graduate in Chemistry and Maths from the Tasmanian College of Advanced Education (now the University of Tasmania); he also holds a Masters degree from Birmingham University in the UK and a Doctor of Philosophy (Psychology) from The Queen’s University of Belfast.

He has published widely in the areas of children’s fitness, health, sport, exercise, performance and education.

Before joining the Academy, Craig was Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Northumbria University where he was responsible for learning and teaching, internationalisation, student services, library, registry and student sport. Prior to his appointment at Northumbria he was the founding Dean of the School of Sport, Performing Arts and Leisure at Wolverhampton University.

Craig has been an outspoken advocate of Internationalisation including globalisation, professional development, staff and student exchange and international partnership development in teaching, research and enterprise.

He has supported several volunteer programmes across the sector and was the executive sponsor of the award winning Community Action Programme in Newcastle, a joint project between the Student Union and the University.

With an international reputation as a sports psychologist, Craig has worked with an extensive range of performers at World, Olympic and Commonwealth level and is an adviser to UEFA and FIFA on psychology in officiating.

He is a formal member of the JISC Advance Board and is a member of several other Higher Education Boards in the UK. Craig is an advocate of e-Learning and the use of technology to create positive blended learning environments.

Christine graduated from Cambridge University and completed her PhD at Nottingham, where today she manages the University's ambitious international strategy, which has attracted students and academic staff from almost 150 nations to research and teaching campuses in both Britain and Asia. She has management board responsibility for the development and integration of Nottingham's historic campuses within China and in Malaysia, and for the work of the University's International Office in the UK. She represents The University of Nottingham worldwide, spending significant periods of time in China and the wider Asia-Pacific region.

Her research interests lie in the area of services marketing and specifically financial services, tourism and higher education. She has focused her research on key strategic themes, including service quality and delivery, loyalty and retention, and service failure and recovery. She has also undertaken business oriented research specifically in the areas of customer satisfaction, marketing relationships and trust, including on behalf of a number of major banking organisations. She has published some 100 articles in refereed journals, presented over 60 refereed conference papers and produced 4 books.

In September 2009, Kate moved to The University of Nottingham to lead their £150M campaign which includes developing the advancement programmes for The University’s campuses in Semenyih, KL, Malaysia and Ningbo, China. The Campaign will be launched publicly in October 2011.

He obtained a first-class degree in Chemistry from the University of Essex and a DPhil in Chemistry from Oxford. His research interests are focussed on molecular modelling and computer-aided drug design. In 2005, Stephen moved to the Malaysia Campus to establish the School of Pharmacy at UNMC and became the Dean of the Faculty of Health & Biological Sciences, later renamed to the Faculty of Science.

Since 2005 he has sat on Management Group at UNMC and has been Chair of the campus Learning and Teaching Committee since 2007. In 2008 Stephen was awarded a Lord Dearing Award for Teaching and Learning.
