Undergraduate

Completion of Canadian Grade 12 (High School Diploma) is required for entry to our bachelors programmes. Some students, especially for Law and Medicine courses, will apply after having completed a first degree; however, students can enter these subjects straight from high school.

For Alberta, New Brunswick, New Foundland, North West Territories, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan, we require a General High School Diploma with minimum 75% in 5 subjects at Grade 12.

For British Colombia and Yukon, we require a Senior Secondary Graduation Diploma with at least 5 B grades in appropriate subjects at grade twelve.

For Manitoba, we require a High School Graduation Diploma with 5 credits awarded at the 300 level in at least 4 subject areas, and at least 75% in each subject.

For Ontario, we require a Grade 12 Secondary School Diploma (advanced level) if awarded at advanced level, with six Grade 12 U, U/C or M courses including Grade 12 U English.

For Quebec, we require a Diplôme d'Etudes Collègiales (DEC).

Typical A level equivalents for overall percentage grades are as follows:

  • 90%+ → AAA-AAB
  • 85%+ → ABB-BBB
  • 80%+ → BBC-BCC
  • 75%+ → CCC

It is worth noting that Canadian students must have a minimum of 90% in Biology and Chemistry to be considered for entry to our undergraduate Medicine programme.

Students taking A levels or the IB should refer to the online undergraduate prospectus for entry requirements.

Students taking APs or SATIIs should refer to entry requirements for the USA.

  • If marked on a 9 point scale – we require an average of at least 7 for entry to programmes requiring a UK 2:1, and at least 5 for programmes requiring a UK 2:2
  • If marked on a percentage scale with a 60% pass mark, we require at least 77% for programmes requiring a UK 2:1, and at least 73% for programmes requiring a UK 2:2
  • If marked on a percentage scale with a 50% pass mark, we require at least 75 % for programmes requiring a UK 2:1, and at least 70% for programmes requiring a UK 2:2
  • If marked on a GPA (4 point Scale), we require at least 3.2 for programmes requiring a UK 2:1, and at least 2.9 for programmes requiring a UK 2:2. An exception to this is the University of Toronto where the equivalent GPAs are 2.8 for a 2:1, and 2.5 for a 2:2

Honours degrees are not required, although students who do have honours degrees may be allowed more flexibility should their GPA be slightly lower than our normal requirements.

English language requirements

To ensure that you can fully benefit from your studies at Nottingham, you will need to demonstrate a required level of English language proficiency.

Students who have completed a recognised degree, or completed the whole of their secondary education in one of these countries within the last 10 years are not normally required to take a separate English language test.

Otherwise, in addition to the more common language qualifications - such as IELTS, TOEFL, (I)GCSE, O level, IB and A and AS level English - the University also considers a number of other English language qualifications for admission.

English language courses

Our Centre for English Language Education (CELE) offers a range of English language courses.

These coures are designed to prepare international students wsith the required language skills for academic study at The University of Nottingham.
