Culture has been compared to an iceberg, with a small part visible above the water and a larger hidden part under the water. Like an iceberg, there are some aspects of culture we can see and are aware of and other aspects that are not obvious which we may not be consciously aware of. Have a look at the examples given below and place them on the iceberg ─ which do you think are more visible and should be above the water, and which are more difficult to understand and should be below the water?
Living and studying in the UK, in a different culture, is an opportunity to experience something new - to be much more than a tourist. To understand why people behave the way they do means understanding something about their culture, values and beliefs.
