Moving to a new country to study requires a lot of preparation. You will also have many important tasks to complete on arrival.
The International Office offers a Welcome Programme to help you settle in at the University, but you can also find information on how to prepare and what to do when you arrive on the following web pages.
You will also need to think about the things below.
Studying at a university in the UK may be very different to what you are used to. It is important to take some time to familiarise yourself with our methods of teaching and assessment before starting your course. This will help you to know what to expect when you start your course at the University.
Find out more in our studying at Nottingham section.
It is advisable for all new international students to open a bank account in the UK. There are two banks (NatWest and Santander) available on campus, and more in the surrounding areas of Nottingham.
It can take a few days to obtain a University letter, and between two and three weeks to open a bank account, so please make sure that you bring enough money (in pounds sterling) or travellers cheques with you to cover your expenses during this time.
Find out more in our financial advice section.
In some cases, depending on nationality, students may need to register with the police in order to meet the conditions of their visa.
If police registration is necessary this will be clearly printed on your visa and you should register within seven days of arrival in the UK. Find out more in our visa conditions section.
The UK has a National Health Service (NHS) which provides free medical care. More information on the NHS and guidance on how to register with a doctor are available in our health and personal safety section.
We also have a guidance leaflet on using health services in the UK .
