Know your destination
Don't wait until you are here to learn a little bit about British culture. You can:
-
search the internet
-
check out travel guides
-
read UK newspapers and magazines
-
read novels or short stories
-
watch films or videos
These will help you both acclimatise to the culture and the language of a new place. How much do you know? Test yourself with our quiz.
Understanding language
You may have a good working knowledge of the English language and you may be fluent in English, however it is likely you will still be surprised to find that the English you have learned or are used to is not necessarily the same as the English used in every day life in the UK.
Lots of jargon is used especially in academic materials. Try reading articles in your subject and test yourself with our Notts natter quiz.
Why cultural awareness matters
Making mistakes is inevitable and things are not always what you think they are. Simple gestures can be misinterpreted, for example, nodding does not always indicate agreement. It might help to think about some of your customs and how they could be different in Nottingham. Remember, there are no 'right' answers.
-
Do you shake hands when you meet friends or hug or kiss on the cheek?
-
Do you make requests outright or begin with general conversation before raising the issue?
-
Do you blow your nose in front of others or leave the room first?
-
Do you feel it is important to be on time for a meeting or take time to chat with a friend who has called unexpectedly?
Practical arrangements
Have you made all the arrangements needed to accept your place? This includes:
-
arranging your accommodation
-
applying for your visa
-
arranging your travel to Nottingham
Check our Pre-Departure Checklist to see how prepared you are.
Join the Welcome Programme
When you first arrive you may find some of the little things you took for granted at home seem more complicated at first, for example, how to:
-
use the telephone
-
buy a mobile phone
-
use public transport
-
open a bank account
The Welcome Programme can help you with these things and much more.
Get involved and make friends
Make an effort to join clubs and societies. The first few weeks are a good time to find out about just what is available on campus...
Culture shock
Homesickness is normal and usually passes. You should expect a certain amount of confusion at first.
It can be useful to think about why you wanted to come to Nottingham, what you are most worried about and what you will miss from home. You can always drop in to speak to our International Support Services Team about any concerns you may have.
