The University of Nottingham offers opportunities for full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students to spend part of their degree in a number of overseas countries outside Europe. These opportunities are offered by the following programmes:

Universitas 21/University-wide programme

The Universitas 21/University-wide programme is a competitive programme that offers full time undergraduate and postgraduate students the opportunity to study at one of our 34 university-wide partner universities –for one semester or one academic year – as part of their Nottingham degree programme. 

Universitas 21 (U21) is an international network of leading research-intensive universities, of which The University of Nottingham is a founding member. We also have an increasing number of international exchange agreements with a number of internationally-renowned universities on a university-wide basis.

Lund University in Sweden and University College Dublin are part of Universitas 21, so if you are interested in studying at either of these partners you should apply to the U21/University-wide programme below, with the exception of Computer Science students who wish to study at Lund University, who should apply via their School through the Erasmus programme.

Academic information 

For the majority of Schools/Departments, the credits gained whilst studying abroad will count towards your Nottingham degree.

Each School/Department participating in the U21/University-wide programme has a member of academic staff who acts as the School Coordinator who is responsible for approving your academic study while abroad, and for providing advice and support on all academic matters. To find out the name of your School Coordinator, please see Study Abroad Opportunities by School. These are correct for students going abroad during 2012/13 and will be updated for students going abroad during 2013/14 in time for the Study Abroad Fair in November 2012.

 
How to apply

The application deadline to study abroad through the Universitas 21/University-wide programme during 2012/13 has now passed. No further applications will be considered.

If you wish to apply to study abroad during 2013/14, applications will open in November 2012.

 
How much will it cost?

Students who are accepted to study abroad through the U21/University-wide programme continue to pay tuition fees to The University of Nottingham; no fees are payable to the host university. Students who study abroad for the full year should be eligible for a tuition fee reduction.

Information for nominated students

Nominated students who are studying abroad during 2012/13 should log into Workspace for pre-departure information relating to immigration, finance, health and safety abroad, insurance, cultural adjustment and advice from previous students.

School Exchange programme

The School Exchange programme offers a limited number of full-time undergraduate students the opportunity to study at a partner university in another country. These exchanges are based on a small number of School-specific exchange agreements and are coordinated by the relevant School/Department. School Exchanges are organised outside of the Erasmus and U21/University-wide exchange programmes.

The study abroad period is normally for the full academic year as part of a four-year degree programme.

Where can I study abroad?

At present School exchanges are offered by a small number of Schools in the following countries:

  • USA
  • Canada 
  • Latin America
  • Russia
  • Australia 
 

School exchanges are offered by the following Schools/Departments: Spanish and Latin American Studies, Architecture and  Built Enviroment, American and Canadian Studies, Law and Chemical Engineering.

Each School/Department participating in the programme has a member of academic staff who acts as the School Coordinator. The School Coordinator is responsible for the exchange agreement with the partner university, agreeing your academic study while abroad and for providing advice and support on all academic matters. For some Schools the credits gained while studying abroad will count back towards your Nottingham degree.

 
How to apply

The School exchange programme is run by individual Schools/Departments. Students are advised to speak to their School Coordinator for information on the selection process and internal deadlines. If you are selected to study abroad your name will be forwarded to your host university by your academic School. Your allocated host university will then send application information in due course.

 
How much will it cost?

Students who are accepted to study abroad continue to pay tuition fees to The University of Nottingham; no fees are payable to the host university. Students who study abroad for the full academic year should be eligible for a tuition fee reduction.

Scholarships

There are two specific scholarships available to students who are applying to study abroad in the USA or Canada:

  • BUNAC Educational Scholarship Trust (BEST) awards from British Universities North America Club (BUNAC): BEST awards are open to UK passport holders who are currently in full time tertiary education at a UK university and who are planning to undertake postgraduate study in either the USA or Canada.   • British Universities Transatlantic Exchange Association (BUTEX) scholarships: BUTEX award eight scholarships to UK students who will be studying abroad in the USA or Canada. Please see the BUTEX website for further information.
