PhD Scholarship for Research Excellence from Brazil

Investing in global talent

20 full tuition fee scholarships available at two leading UK universities

The University of Birmingham and the University of Nottingham are working in partnership to support research collaboration with Brazilian institutions and we are pleased to be able to offer 20 full tuition fee scholarships for PhD students from Brazil

With a combined research income of over £200m, Birmingham and Nottingham are two of the leading universities in UK higher education – take the opportunity to be a part of a dynamic research community

The scholarships will be available for students commencing in September/October 2012 and will be available for a maximum of three years

It is anticipated that a living allowance will be provided by the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES), including a return international airfare and more information is available on their website

Eligibility criteria

  • Candidates should be citizens and permanent residents of Brazil at the time of application
  • Candidates must not be currently working or studying abroad
  • Candidates must be classed as overseas for fee purposes
  • Candidates must hold an offer for a full time PhD degree programme from the University of Birmingham
    or The University of Nottingham to start in September/October 2012, and they must therefore fulfil the relevant academic and English language proficiency entry requirements

Candidates should have an approved proposed study topic and preference will be given to the following subject areas

  • Energy, with particular reference to sustainable energy, bioenergy, carbon capture and storage, oil and gas, nuclear energy and energy policy
  • Food security
  • Globalisation (particularly from an economics/business perspective)
  • Imaging, neuroscience and cognition
  • Astronomy
  • Mathematics
  • Materials (from nano to structural material properties)
  • Digital economy
  • Biotechnology, biological chemistry and drug discovery
  • Global infection and healthcare
  • Urban planning and regeneration
  • Sustainable heritage and environment
  • Clinical, pre-clinical and health sciences
  • Computing and information technology
  • Aerospace technology
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Sustainable agricultural production
  • Renewable energy
  • Nanotechnology and new materials
  • Bioprospecting and biodiversity

The call from CAPES has now been launched and to be considered for the award applicants must have received an academic offer from the University and submit a separate application to CAPES – please see the CAPES website for more information – the closing date for applications is 26 April 2012
