IT network

Information about the University's network services including:

The campus network

The University network provides access to PC services, including Microsoft Outlook, the internet and the Intranet Portal through over 30,000 fixed and wireless access points.

The network has been designed to cope with a high throughput so is able to cope with very complex needs.

The University acts as a Managed Access Point (MAP) site for the United Kingdom Education and Research Networking Association (UKERNA). It is part of the East Midlands Metropolitan Area Network (EMMAN), for which it provides connectivity to SuperJANET, the UK’s education and research network.

For information on getting connected, visit our Getting Started page.

Connection to the Student Network Service (SNS)

Network access for students living in hall study bedrooms is provided through the Student Network Service (SNS).

Connection to the standard University network

You can have a new data point installed and existing points made live by contacting the telephone services helpline. There is a charge of £130 for each new data point installation or £20 to make live an existing point.

Computers must be registered before connecting them to data points. To register your computer, contact your IT representative.

Requests for installing data outlets should be made to telephone services.

Residents of staff houses on campus can subscribe to the University broadband service.

Connection to the secure wireless network

The wireless service network for staff and students at the University is UoN-secure. A guest service is also available.

Bandwidth

The standard data connection is 100MB.

We are able to provide 1GB connection in some areas at a higher cost. Please enquire through the telephone services helpline.

Management of data points

As the number of data points on the University network keeps increasing so does the amount of bandwidth needed.

Data points that have not been used for more than a year will usually be disconnected. However, Schools and Departments can ask for an unused point be kept live for a one-off charge of £20 per point.

If a data point that has been disconnected is subsequently needed, it can be reconnected by contacting the telephone services helpline.

Faults

Physical faults with data points (for example a broken face plate) on the Standard University network should be reported to the telephone services helpline.

Connection problems should be reported to the IT Helpline.

Faults with data connectivity on the SNS network should be reported to the Hall Manager in the first instance.
