Setting up your web browser
To view external websites that are not on The University of Nottingham network, you will need to configure your web browser to use the University secure web gateway. Users on the SNS browsing without configuring their browser will do so through a heavily filtered connection to the Internet which will seem very slow.
Follow the instructions for your browser or operating system below.
Configuring your computer to use the secure web gateway
Configuring for Internet Explorer & Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7

launch Internet Explorer then go to Tools menu and select Internet Options

select the Connections tab, click LAN settings then select the Use automatic configuration script option

type in the proxy address: http://wwwcache.nottingham.ac.uk/proxy.pac then click OK and Apply
Configuring for Mozilla Firefox (Windows, Mac & Linux)

launch Firefox then go to the Tools menu, select Options then select the Advanced menu

select the Network tab and select click on the Settings button

a Connection Settings window will appear. Select Automatic proxy configuration URL

type in the proxy address: http://wwwcache.nottingham.ac.uk/proxy.pac then click OK and Apply
Configuring for Apple OSX (Safari)

go to System Preferences from the Apple menu

in System Preferences , select the Network icon

highlight Ethernet and click the Advanced button

select the Proxies tab and make sure that Automatic Proxy Configuration is selected

type in the proxy address: http://wwwcache.nottingham.ac.uk/proxy.pac then click OK and Apply
Alternative or Manual settings
If for some reason you have problems with the proxy.pac file:

In the preferences above, select the option for Use Automatic Settings, Auto Proxy Discovery or similar.

What is the Secure Web Gateway
The University uses a secure web gateway (also called a proxy server) to scan incoming web traffic for viruses and malicious content. By protecting users in this way, thousands of potential threats to the University are blocked every month.
