Connecting Windows XP to UoN-secure (text only instructions)

You can connect Windows XP to the UoN-secure wireless service. You will need Service Pack 2, or better still, Service Pack 3, which are available to download at Microsoft.

  1. click the wireless adaptor icon on the taskbar to open the Wireless Network Connection window
  2. check the wireless network you want is shown as available. If it is not listed you are not within range of a wireless hotspot
  3. select Change advanced settings under Related Tasks
  4. select the Wireless Networks tab
  5. click Advanced
  6. select Access point (infrastructure) networks only. Make sure that Automatically connect to non-preferred networks is NOT ticked. Click Close
  7. if you have set up a preferred network list on your laptop, for security reasons you will need to 'hide' this list so that other UoN-secure wireless users cannot see it when they connect. To do this, select each network in the Preferred networks list then click Properties.  Check that the Connect even if this network is not broadcasting option is unticked to prevent your laptop from transmitting the names of your preferred networks. Click OK
  8.  click on UoN-secure from the Preferred networks box then click Properties
  9.  on the Association tab, set the Network Authentication to WPA2 and Data Encryption to AES. If WPA2 options are not available, either your network card drivers need updating or WPA2 is not supported on the hardware. You will need to update your drivers and try again. If your hardware does not support WPA2 you will not be able to use this service
  10.  on the Authentication tab, set the EAP type to Protected EAP (PEAP). Untick all the other boxes
  11.  click Properties and ensure Validate server certificate and Enable Fast Reconnect are NOT selected. On Select authentication method, ensure that Secured password (EAP-MSCHAPv2) is selected
  12.  click on Configure and untick automatically using the Windows logon name then click OK
  13.  click OK to Protected EAP Properties
  14.  click OK to UoN-secure Properties
  15.  click OK to Wireless Network Connection Properties window
  16.  click the wireless adaptor icon on the taskbar and click on UoN-secure. A Wireless Network Connection box will appear, you will be asked for your University username and password. Leave the domain name blank. Click OK

You are now setup for UoN-secure. In future, enter your University username and password every time you want to connect.
