Placenta praevia risk increased after IVF

Research published online in Human Reproduction suggests that the risk of placneta praevia rose from about three in 1,000 pregnancies in the general population, to 16 in 1,000 for women who had had IVF.

NICE gudiance on Laparoscopic helium plasma coagulation for endometriosis

The National Institute for Health and Clinical excellence has published Laparoscopic helium plasma coagulation for endometriosis The guidance concludes that current evidence suggests there are no major safety concerns associated with laparoscopic helium plasma coagulation for the treatment of endometriosis. However, evidence on efficacy does not appear adequate for this procedure to be used without special arrangements for consent and for audit or research.

FSID survey of parents

The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths has conducted a survey of parents and found that 21% of mothers do not always place young babies down to sleep on their back. The new survey also finds that parents are not giving their babies much time playing on their front or sitting up. A new leaflet produced by FSID , “Sleep on the back, play on the front”, highlights the key baby safety message to parents that they must continue to sleep their babies on the back in order to reduce the risk of cot death, explains the importance of supervised front play and gives parents tips for ‘tummy time’ activities.

HFEA - Authority decision on PGD

The Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority has issued a Statement on use of Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) for inherited cancer susceptibility The HFEA issues licences permitting fertility clinics to use the embryo screening technique, called pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), where a cell from a three-day old embryo is tested. Ten clinics are currently allowed to use PGD to test for inherited conditions where carrying a faulty gene guarantees the resulting child will have the illness. Now IVF clinics will be able to offer tests to couples with a family history of breast cancer, ovarian cancer and a type of colon cancer.
