Michaelmas 1621
Letter from Edw. Cooper [curate] of Hickling, to Mr Tibberd:
Reports that Thomas Gesson has brought [back] the book he was presented
for [see AN/PB 314/2/98], but the bearer can testify in what manner he
took the book out of the church chest; bearer will affirm that he did
not lend the book, but that Gesson took it out of the chest when he was
busy in providing for a communion; Cooper and the churchwardens are agreed
that the word 'lend' can be altered in the former presentment; they presented
less than the truth because at the time they did not know the whole truth;
the bearer John Rawlinson can testify that he demanded the book from him
for his own private reading, and that though Gesson had restored it, he
did it in contempt.
He does these things against Cooper undeservedly and is set on by others
who also malice Cooper undeservedly; Ralinson can also testify how Gesson
laughed aloud and molested Cooper in time of divine service on New Year's
Day at evening prayer; asks that if the oaths of Cooper and Rawlinson
will stand good, this fame of disorder and misdemeanour in the church
be added into the presentment; neither Mr Bardsey [parson of Hickling]
nor Cooper want two separate presentments, but would like these things
to aggravate the other [existing] presentment.
Place name given as Hicklin.

Anonymous presentment of the following: Thomas Jesson took the book of
the Defence of the Apology of the Church of England out of the chest in
the chancel on Christmas Day last, at such time as the parish clerk was
busy about bread and wine for communion, saying that he would use the
said book in prayer time and that he would restore the same again; but
when the book was demanded from him by the parish clerk, he said that
he had taken it away and would keep it a week; he kept the book from Christmas
Day at morning prayer until twelfth day at evening prayer, so that the
minister could not have the book for his own private use; also he talked
and laughed in prayer time on New Year's Day.

Michaelmas 1621
Churchwardens present the following: Thomas Dafte junior for not coming
to church to hear divine service on Sundays or holy days from 25 December
to 10 or 17 February last; on Twelfth Day last he came to the church in
prayer time and clapped his brother Richard Dafte on the back and gave
him a shake or two by the shoulder, and whispered something unintelligble
to William Smyth, one of the churchwardens, and then immediately went
out of the church again; he would not humble himself on his knees to say
his prayers and would not take a place in any seat to hear divine service
although the one he has used for at least 20 years was empty, and so were
divers other decent seats [locations and usual occupiers of which are
stated in detail]; Thomas Dafte junior for being absent from church from
10 or 17 February until today's date.
Ann Dafte, wife of the said Thomas Dafte, for being absent from divine
service on Sundays and holy days from 9 December to 3 February last; on
9 December, the said Ann Dafte went out of the church during divine prayers,
although there was room in her usual seat, she was not molested by any
person, and other honest women with no usual seats had quietly placed
themselves without urging the churchwardens to place them as she the said
Ann did, just when the minister had put on his surplice ready to open
his mouth and begin prayer.
Richard Dafte, son of John Dafte senior, for refusing to pay 4d due to
the parish clerk for his accustomed wages; the said Richard Dafte inhabits
the west end of the house in which his father John dwells, and keeps his
fire and family by himself and pays his several 'waxchotes' due to the
parson; the custom is that where 'waxchotes' are due for any new erected
house, even when more than one are under the same roof, the sum of 4d
per year is likewise due and payable to the parish clerk; the clerk has
no other wages than the accustomed dues at marriages, and his dinner at
the churching of every woman; when a house decays or is not used, the
parish clerk loses his 4d per year from it [various examples given of
householders whose houses are decayed, and of people who thirty years
ago and at the present time lived under the same roof and nevertheless
each paid separate 'waxchotes' and wages].
Charles Collington, yeoman, for not paying his levy to the churchwardens
towards the repair of the parish church; the levy was agreed on 30 May
1621 at a rate of 6d per oxgang of land, 2d per house, 2d per beast and
8d per score of sheep; the churchwardens have already spent more than
was received, but the inhabitants have refused to grant another levy until
those who are behind have paid what they owe; Richard Smyth alias Cooke
for not paying his levy as above.

Easter 1628
Churchwardens and swornmen present the following: our minister is conformable,
but he does not catechise on Sundays and holy days except in Lent or a
little before, when he prepares the younger sort of people for the receiving
of the sacrament at Easter; the reason for his not catechising at other
times is the distance of the church, being almost a mile from the town;
likewise he does not always read the litany on Sundays, only when there
is no sermon; we certify that because the poor man's box has heretofore
been broken open, the alms for the poor are put into the overseers' hands,
and the chest for keeping the ornaments of the church stands at the parsonage
house, as the church is in the fields far from any house; we have no schoolmaster,
nor any recusant papists within our parish.

Letter from Jo. Musson [vicar] of Orston, to Mr Hatfeild Reckles at Nottingham:
Has received a writ of excommunication against his parishioner Marie Bell;
dares not stay it without warrant from the court; desires Reckles to certify
that 'shee waites her everie houre' and is unable to travel half a mile;
entreats that what is done may be reversed, or else that she be again
absolved, so that she may not be deprived of women's help which she now
needs; hopes Reckles will pity her; also mentions that the churchyard
is so badly fenced that it cannot be kept with the decency it ought to
have; it is rather a common than a sanctified place; will not determine
whether it is the fault of the churchwardens or the parishioners; asks
that Reckles would reform the abuse and 'terrifie, if not punish' the
delinquents.
