![]() Address from "an elector" to "the Worthy and Independent Electors of the Town of Nottingham" [c.26 July 1829] (ref. NeC4 569) |
This collection of papers reflects the Newcastle family's considerable patronage and influence in parliamentary elections, particularly in Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire.
The papers concern the elections in Newark, Retford, Bassetlaw and South Nottinghamshire, as well as Aldborough and Boroughbridge in Yorkshire, between 1790 and 1865, and in Falkirk Burghs, Scotland, in 1846. They are especially concerned with the bitter dispute between the 4th Duke of Newcastle under Lyne and his son, the Earl of Lincoln (later the 5th Duke of Newcastle under Lyne) over the election in South Nottinghamshire in 1846.

Pelham-Clinton] 4th Duke of Newcastle under Lyne;
26 Apr. 1831

press possesses a 'fearful power' for good or bad';
refers to the recent attacks in the press upon the

Thanks the duke for the 'handsome manner' in which

Foljambe is being 'very coy and difficult' in the
northern division and does not appear to want a
contest; comments briefly on the electioneering of
Mr Houldsworth; hopes that Mr Foljambe's
procrastination will have saved Knight from
'imminent jeopardy'; agrees with the duke that the

Conservative, even though Scarbrough 'hoped' they
would vote for Mr Foljambe; reports that all the
tenants of the Duke of St Albans will vote for Mr

Knight cannot succeed; discusses the unpopularity
of Mr Vernon; presumes Vernon will be beaten if he
becomes a candidate; will send his account book and
vouchers that day; thinks that the duke will not
approve of Mr Gregory's 'elevations' and that the
buildings cannot be 'much amended, for the purposes
they are wanted'; says that several acres of
