Introduction

Address from "an elector"
to "the Worthy and Independent Electors of the Town of Nottingham"
[c.26 July 1829]
(ref. NeC4 569)

This collection of papers reflects the Newcastle family's considerable patronage and influence in parliamentary elections, particularly in Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire.

The papers concern the elections in Newark, Retford, Bassetlaw and South Nottinghamshire, as well as Aldborough and Boroughbridge in Yorkshire, between 1790 and 1865, and in Falkirk Burghs, Scotland, in 1846. They are especially concerned with the bitter dispute between the 4th Duke of Newcastle under Lyne and his son, the Earl of Lincoln (later the 5th Duke of Newcastle under Lyne) over the election in South Nottinghamshire in 1846.

                                            more personal; believes the Reform Bill to be
                                            nothing more than a struggle by the Whigs to gain
                                            political ascendency over the Tories; fears that

                                            Discusses briefly the 'strange conduct' of the
                                            Holdsworth clique; thinks that Holdsworth should

                                            explains that Mr Knight's agents have been
                                            apathetic, whilst Mr Foljambe's are very active;

                                            discusses the strong support for Mr Foljambe; says
                                            he has never requested a vote on the grounds that

                                            prevailing opinion that Mason has no chance of
                                            election and will be beaten by Captain Duncombe and
                                            Mr Vernon; thinks Duncombe can only be safe if he

                                            to vote; believes the duke to have 'mistaken his

                                            believes from his canvass that unless the duke's
                                            interest is 'given exclusively to him he will lose
                                            the election'; says that plumpers for Mason and

                                            comments on a nomination meeting at Mansfield; says

                                            Comments on the desire of constituents to see the
                                            'candidates for their representation', especially
                                            when they are as popular as Lord Lincoln is; thinks
                                            the appearance of 'one of his brothers' would be
                                            welcomed by the constituency; requests that the
                                            duke send a letter directing him to make it public

                                            combined with the promises of support from the Duke
                                            of Portland and Lord Middleton for Lord Lincoln and
                                            Colonel Rolleston would result in Denison retiring
                                            from the contest; says that the cause of Lincoln's
                                            absence [illness of Susan, Countess of Lincoln] is
                                            'well known'; thinks the harvest will be a good

                                            states that Lord Lincoln is the 'deluded victim of

                                            to oppose Sir Robert Peel to the utmost, saying
                                            that 'no ties of blood will form an exception';
                                            discusses the vehemence of the duke's opposition to
                                            Peel; has told the duke that after years of acting

                                            Comments on a meeting at Newark at which Peel was
                                            attacked with 'great venom'; says that Lincoln can

                                            Reports that Mr Baird (M.P. for the Falkirk
                                            Boroughs) has offered to resign in Lincoln's

                                            2 May 1846

                                            Lincoln's victory by fourteen votes with
                                            'confusion'; rejoices at the victory; believes 'The
                                            Times' did Lincoln 'all the mischief in their
                                            power' after hearing of Mr Baird's resignation;
                                            hopes the Duke of Hamilton was influential in his
                                            support; thinks that the renewal of good relations

                                            expectation upon Lincoln; hopes he is in good
                                            health; believes he possesses 'power for debate' of
                                            which he is 'yet unconscious'; thinks there will be
                                            a battle with the member for King's Lynn; asks if
                                            he wishes Ranby [Hall] to be let in his absence;
                                            wanted to go to a sale at Hardwick, but feared
                                            meeting the duke; comments on the support of the
