Information about facilities available in teaching rooms including:
Teaching room facilities
The Teaching Room Support Group provides a call out service for University staff requiring urgent help operating audio visual (AV) facilities in centrally timetabled rooms. Staff are located across the University so that they can respond quickly and minimise disruption to the teaching timetable.
Arrangements for the demonstration of AV facilities can also be made.
Standard equipment
Many centrally timetabled rooms are equipped with AV systems which include:
-
a PC
-
VCR/DVD player
-
interactive whiteboard
-
presentation audio system
-
connections for a laptop and auxiliary video devices
A full list of the facilities and equipment in each room is available from the Timetabling office .
Additional equipment
If the room does not have the required facilities, portable equipment including digital audio recording kits, and audience response systems is available on request.
-
requests are made with the equipment booking form
-
confirmation of your booking will be sent via email within one working day
-
there is a limited supply of kits so booking requests are dealt with on a strictly first come first served basis
* Please note that one full day's notice is required for all booking requests.
Developments
Commencing summer 2011, there are a few changes to the standard audio visual specification for teaching rooms. These include widescreen projection to complement the new video and computer formats, and the introduction of visualisers (document cameras) as standard provision. Modern looking lecterns now house the equipment to offer more flexibility, and systems are monitored remotely, enabling support staff to respond more quickly when assistance is needed. VCRs and OHPs will no longer be specified in new build or refurbished teaching rooms and existing units will no longer be supported once they fail. The main reasons for this are:
-
The Optical Radiation Directive, which came into force in April 2010, says that workers should not come into contact with technology that requires them to look directly into a light source. The design of an OHP makes this very difficult to avoid. To help remove this risk, OHPs will be replaced with visualisers.
-
With manufacturers discontinuing production, spare components are difficult to obtain and have become expensive. With advances in technology alternative electronic solutions are now available.
For the start of the academic year 2011/2012 all teaching room PCs will have the Windows 7 operating system installed, which will require users to login to gain access to applications. Please see http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/is/computer/windows7.aspx#windows7 for more details. Anyone requiring access to the PC who doesn’t have a UoN account will need to set up an associate account in advance. See http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/is/connect/associateitaccounts.aspx
Demonstrations of the new facilities can be arranged by contacting Teaching Room Support at http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/is/help/contact/teachingroomsupport.aspx
Interactive Teaching Rooms (ITR)
Interactive Teaching Rooms are classrooms that offer lecture capture and video conferencing.
Lecture capture records presentations, audio and images of the presenter, simultaneously. These lectures can then be published online so that students can study the lecture again, recapping particular points or filling in missing notes at their convenience, making it an ideal revision tool.
Instructions are available on how to use the lecture capture system (PDF
).
Video conferencing allows simultaneous teaching to local and remote audiences. With many schools teaching the same lecture and seminars to students in Ningbo and Malaysia, the ability to teach them simultaneously encourages student interaction and cuts down on the need for expensive and time consuming travel.
Teaching room support can provide technical support throughout a video conferencing call in an Interactive teaching room if required.

Video conferencing suites enable you to communicate with similar, dedicated video conference systems including those at the Ningbo and Malaysian campuses.
Teaching room support can provide technical support throughout a video conferencing call, if required. For bookings between 9am-5pm Monday to Friday this service is free, but outside of these hours there is a charge for technical support.
