Current research

I am part of a major project funded by Leverhulme researching 'Risk, the public understanding of science and public policy' led by the Institute for the Study of Biorisk and Society. I am also developing a framework for evaluating the relationship between science and politics in technical areas of policy-making; developing a theory of technological politics from a socio-technical perspective; comparing the influence of science in UK policy responses to BSE and AIDS; examining the ongoing review of the law related to human tissue retention, removal and use in medical research.

Expertise summary

Looking at policy-making around genetics and risk issues, she is interested in assessing the governance of scientific and technological research, and the politics of technical decision-making. She seeks to combine empirical approaches from STS and policy network analysis, with normative questions from recent theories of democracy and concepts of political rationality. Modules taught: The politics of science, technology and risk. Areas of supervision for research students: What is the role played by scientific expertise vis-à-vis bureaucratic experience in formulating and implementing risk management policies?; How does ethics mediate political conflicts over genetic technologies and their modes of production?; Specific areas in which these questions could be relevant include: UK and international policy responses to antibiotic resistance; regulation of biomedical research; European Union life sciences and biotechnology policy; scientific advisory committees and their role in policy-making
