Guest wireless for short term visitors

The University of Nottingham provides short term visitors with free access to the UoN-guest wireless network. 

 

Who can use UoN-guest?

  • members of the general public visiting campus
  • short term visitors to schools
  • conference delegates
  • contractors, commercial partners 

How to connect - before you arrive

If you know you will be visiting the University of Nottingham, you can register for an account to access the visitors wireless network before you arrive. This will save you time once you get here as you can be up and running straight away.

  1. Visit the PASS (Pre-Arrival Self Signup) website an follow the instructions to register for an account. 
  2. You will then be sent an email asking you to confirm your request and  with your username & password information. You have 10 minutes grace time to read this and click the link to confirm your access. If you do not validate your account, then it will be deleted and you will need to re-register.
  3. Once confirmed, your account is valid for the next 7 days.
  4. Once you arrive on campus, connect to UoN-guest and click 'log in', using the username and password sent to you by email.

How to connect - once you are here

  1. Make sure the wireless network adapter is activated on your device
  2. If you are in range, your device should automatically connect to the UoN-guest network.  If not, find ‘UoN-guest’ in the list of wireless connections available and select this network. If it is not listed you are not within range of the hotspot. Please move the device until you are in range
  3. Open your web browser, then browse to any unsecure website such as www.bbc.co.uk.
  4. The UoN-guest wireless login page will appear
  5. If you have already created an account, click the link to log in, otherwise follow the on-screen instructions to register for an account.
  6. You will be sent a confirmation email with your username and password. You have 10 minutes grace time to read and confirm your access. If you do not validate your account, then it will be deleted and your device will disconnect once its 10 minutes grace period expires.
  7. Once you have confirmed your account, disconnect and reconnect, logging in with your account details. You can log in and use the service for 7 days before you will need to re-register.

Using UoN-guest

The UoN-guest wireless network allows devices to establish connections to websites and other internet services. 

A device which is successfully connected to the network will be provided with access to most internet destinations using standard ports e.g. http and https. 

Please note:

  • ‘UoN-guest network’ is an open network and does not provide encryption for traffic transmitted or received by connected devices. 
  • Security for connections made using the UoN-guest network remains the responsibility of the user and the service is used at your own risk. Please do not enter passwords online when using this network.
  • If you do not validate your account within the 10 minutes grace period you will be disconnected and need to re-register.
  • Up to 4 devices can be used under one username and password. More available on request for special circumstances.
