MSc Occupational Health Psychology

The MSc in Occupational Health Psychology focuses on people at work, their well-being and performance; it aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to ‘make a difference’ by improving working life.

It is hosted by the internationally renowned Institute of Work, Health & Organisations, a World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre, located in a prestigious brand new building on an award winning campus.

The Institute’s research is recognised in the recent Government’s Research Assessment Exercise as one of the leading universities in the UK for its excellence in research. The Institute’s world-leading research drives its teaching so that students benefit immediately from the latest research findings, and can put them to use in their careers. The Institute scored 24/24 and ‘Excellent’ in recent government evaluations of the quality of its teaching.

The MSc Occupational Health Psychology provides an ideal route into a PhD in Occupational Health: Psychology & Management, for those interested in taking their development to the next level. This offers students, both part-time and full-time, professional development opportunities, team-based knowledge sharing and a supportive social structure.

What will I study? What practical skills will I learn?

The Institute is renowned for its work on understanding preventing and reducing work-related stress. Other topics students cover include work-life-balance, organisational change and development, leadership, training, the effects of physical working conditions on performance and health, legal frameworks for healthy working conditions, the ageing population, and others. As well as gaining knowledge about the latest international research developments, students will be trained how to apply this knowledge in today’s organisations. The course will equip them with the research skills required to explore important issues at work: how to conduct interviews, how to design a survey and analyse the results. They will attend workshops on developing their own careers and CVs (resumés), and on consultancy skills.

What careers is this course suitable for?
Past students on this course are now successfully employed in consultancy companies all over the world, as management consultants, trainers and educators, researchers, specialising in developing organisations and promoting the well-being and productivity of their workforces.

Further information is available on the Workplace Health & Wellbeing pages.

Is it designed for international students?

The University of Nottingham prides itself in its international outlook in both its research and teaching. This MSc programme is no exception and recognises the global nature of work in many of today’s organisations. Students are offered the opportunity to undertake some of their studies in a topic relevant to the country of their choice. They may even, if they wish, undertake a supervised project based in the country of their choice. The course is designed for Uk-based and European and International students: the Institute has successful graduated from over 40 countries throughout the world.

The course is delivered in English, so international students need to demonstrate their proficiency in English by IELTS (6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any element), or equivalent.

What else do I need to know?

The course is listed on the websites of: the European Academy of Occupational Health Psychology,  the US National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health and the US Society for Occupational Health Psychology.
