A World Health Organization Collaborating Centre
in Occupational Health since 1992

The Centre for Organizational Health & Development (COHD) is an internationally renowned specialized research centre in occupational health in the University of Nottingham, and only one of three WHO collaborating centres in occupational health in the UK.
 

Areas of expertise

The COHD specializes in occupational health and psychology issues with a view towards organizational health and development.

Within the Centre, the WHO programme of work focuses on occupational health and safety and business sustainability. Main themes in the Centre’s work for WHO are:

  • work organization and the management of the psychosocial work environment for business and societal sustainability
  • corporate social responsibility and occupational safety and health
  • psychosocial risk management in relation to policy and business

This research programme has to date attracted over £1.5 million and has generated several publications and guidance documents having a strong impact on policy and practice. COHD also supports WHO in the implementation of the Global Plan of Action for Workers’ Health across WHO regions.

The Centre’s programe of work for WHO forms only part of its activities. Several additional research programmes are managed through the Centre.

Key research programmes

PRIMA-EF

This policy oriented research programme:

  • supported by the PRIMA-EF consortium involving different European and international partners
  • has received continuous funding through national bodies and the European Commission since 2004
  • focuses on the development of an excellence framework for the management of psychosocial risks and work-related stress in the workplace

Outputs include:

  • guidance by the WHO
  • the first guidance standard for the management of psychosocial risks in the workplace for the British Standards Institution (PAS1010)
  • an e-learning training platform in the area of psychosocial risk management (www.prima-ef.org/primaet.html)

Work is currently ongoing to adapt the framework for use outside Europe in collaboration with partners in different countries such as Japan and Brazil. More information is available at: www.prima-ef.org  

 
CSR-OSH

This programme seeks to establish the potential of corporate social responsibility for promoting occupational health and safety in the developing world and to demonstrate how occupational health and safety can help alleviate poverty and hunger towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

  • funded by the British Council's DelPHE programme
  • involves partner institutions from Africa, Spain and the Netherlands
  • aims at developing capacities in partner Higher Education Institutions

OSH Regulation

This research programme examines the changing landscape of occupational health and safety regulation in the UK.

  • funded by the Institution of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH) 
  • involves numerous stakeholders in health and safety in the UK
  • addresses the needs of SMEs and the role of health and safety professionals in the changing OSH landscape 
 
Integrating psychosocial risks in strategic risk management for business and policy development

This new research programme aims to develop a comprehensive framework for addressing and managing psychosocial risks in strategic business management as well as in policy making that can be applied at organisational, national, European and international levels with a view to promoting sustainability and reducing inequalities.

  • funded by the University’s Integrating Global Society Initiative
  • involves the Nottingham University Business School, the School of Sociology & Social Policy and the School of Contemporary Chinese Studies
 
Associated Programmes

Several programmes are associated with the Centre:

  • hosting both the European Academy of Occupational Health Psychology and its associated journal Work & Stress
  • supporting the Springer book series Aligning Perspectives in Health, Safety & Well-being
  • longstanding member of the Topic Centre of the European Agency for Safety & Health at Work in Bilbao
  • recognised as an approved collaborating centre of the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living & Working Conditions in Dublin
  • supporting activities of the International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH) and in particular its scientific committee on Work Organisation & Psychosocial Factors
