Organisation of the University

Detailed information about how the University is governed can be found in Section 1 of the Staff Handbook (University username and password required).

Briefly, the organisation of the University and the methods of governance are laid down in the University Charter.  Two major bodies, the Council and the Senate, govern the University and have a range of committees and sub-committees.

  • The Council has general control over the conduct of the University’s affairs and is responsible for its overall organisational structure, finances, properties, investments and business.
  • The Senate is the supreme academic body in the University.  It has a wide membership of Academic University staff and student representatives. The Senate has responsibility for regulating and directing the academic work of the University in teaching, examining and research.
  • The Management Board is chaired by Vice Chancellor Professor David Greenaway and has the following membership:
    • Pro-Vice-Chancellors : Professor Karen Cox, Professor Alan Dodson, Professor Christine Ennew, Professor David Riley, Professor Chris Rudd, Professor Bob Webb
    • Registrar: Dr Paul Greatrix
    • Chief Financial Officer : Mr Chris Thompson
    • Executive Officer : Dr Eleanor Duthie

The Management Board is the executive arm of the Strategy and Planning Committee (a major committee of Council) and plans and steers the executive direction of the University.

The following PowerPoint presentation is used on the University Welcome Day and provides further information about the University and how it is governed and managed (see slide 8 onwards).

Academic Organisation

Throughout the University, Departments, Schools and Research Groups in related academic disciplines are grouped together in Faculties.  Theere are five faculties - Arts, Social Sciences, Law and Education, Science, Engineering, and Medicine and Health Sciences.  A detailed list of the Faculties and their associated Schools can be found in the staff handbook .

Each School has responsibility for how the University policies operate within their own disciplinary context, so the starting point for discovering how teaching works and what the University requires is normally your own Head of School, the School Manager or the School’s Learning and Teaching Committee.
