Rob’s story

Sometimes people are surprised when I tell them that I’m a Security Manager at the University. They think that it might be easy, but what they don’t realise is that every September thousands of new students arrive, and it’s my responsibility to keep them all safe.

During the annual Fresher’s Fair my team hand out crime prevention information that we’re supplied by the Home Office. I then go around to all the Halls of Residence and talk to the students about crime prevention and how they can do their bit to help keep themselves safe.

I really champion a product called Smart Water – it’s a clear liquid like nail varnish that students apply to their valuable property. Which means that if a product is stolen and then recovered by the police they can identify where it has come from and who it belongs to.

I’ve been here for 15 years as a Security Officer and through a series of promotions I was delighted to gain the role of Security Manager. I think I’ve managed to achieve this because I really enjoy my job. I investigate thefts, follow-up on burglaries, and work with the Police and Nottingham City Council. Basically everyday I help people – and there aren’t many jobs you can say that about.
