The purpose of this module is to introduce students to issues which will give them a better understanding of the study of a foreign language. It begins by providing students with a general introduction to the distinctive features of human communication in comparison to other forms of communication, for example animal communication. It then deals with the genetic relation between languages focusing on the similarities and dissimilarities between language families. The module will then introduce students to the basic notions of several subfields of Linguistics. Students will also be provided with the tools to transfer the linguistic notions covered during the course to their own language learning experience.
This module provides students with a basic insight into Arabic culture beginning with a general introduction to Arabic as a language before exploring geographical/historical/linguistic areas around which the culture has evolved. It is expected that knowledge gained through the course will enable students to take up Arabic language modules offered by the Language Centre, for example Inter Faculty Stages 1, 2, and 3 depending on their level of language. Students are expected to take an active part in their learning, which does involve preparation before class, active participation during, and follow-up work after, in order to learn and gain a better understanding of Arabic.
Lecture Topics:
This module aims to develop and improve students’ writing skills in Spanish by providing them with practice in creative writing in the target language supported by the study of creative features of relevant contemporary fiction in Spanish. Students will work in prose forms such as short stories, flash fiction (stories of not more than 150 words) and autobiography. Students will also be encouraged to explore the place of their creativity in their own lives and academic studies.
A range of activities will be provided to students to stimulate their imagination and their writing. Their work will be discussed with the other members of the group in weekly workshops and students will be encouraged to re-work their creative writing as a result of the comments made by fellow students and feedback provided by the tutor in the writing workshop.
