In December 2011, the University awarded The Honourable Sir Rabinder Singh the degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa. Sir Rabinder has strong links with the School of Law as he was formerly a Lecturer and later a Special Professor of Law. Indeed, Sir Rabinder told the Degree Congregation that he had met his wife, a fellow Law Lecturer, whilst they had both been members of the School of Law.
Sir Rabinder was appointed as a Justice of the High Court in October 2011 and he is currently the youngest High Court Judge in the country. Prior to his elevation to the Bench Sir Rabinder had been a founder member of Matrix Chambers. In 2001, the Lawyer Magazine named him ‘Barrister of the Year’ and in the following year he was appointed a QC. He became a Deputy High Court Judge in 2003 and a Recorder of the Crown Court in 2004. In 2006 he was selected as ‘Human Rights Lawyer of the Year’ by two of the UK’s leading human rights organisations. During his time at the Bar Sir Rabinder appeared before the House of Lords/the UK Supreme Court in over 35 cases. He also argued cases before the European Court of Human Rights and the European Court of Justice.
