The focus of this module is the control of polluting activities and pollutants under international law. It is concerned both with identifying the major causes of transboundary pollution and with their legal regulation.
-
What is 'pollution'?
-
What international legal regulations exist for its control and amelioration?
-
How are individuals and/or States held responsible for causing pollution harm?
It is these questions with which the course will be centrally concerned. The seminars will take a case study approach to each of the topics to be covered, with particular emphasis upon atmospheric and freshwater pollution. Controlling and reducing emissions of harmful greenhouse gases; and substances which deplete the ozone layer; regulation of airborne pollution and nuclear contamination and pollution of international watercourses, are some of the major pollution law issues considered.
