Class of 2006/07
Before coming to Nottingham I had just finished my two-year legal training ('Referendariat') and qualified to work as a lawyer in Germany.
I had started writing my PhD thesis when I was still in Germany. I chose Nottingham as my PhD supervisor recommended the School of Law to me; I felt that it had a very good program in the field of my specialisation, international humanitarian law and international criminal law. Also, tuition fees and the cost of living are reasonable in Nottingham as compared to other cities.
The LLM offered me an in-depth look into the area I studied, excellent research facilities, interesting discussions with my teachers and fellow students and a great opportunity to make friends with people from across the globe.
After finishing the LLM at Nottingham, I worked as a barrister with an international law firm, while at the same time finishing my PhD thesis. Two years later, I joined the Federal Foreign Office and became a diplomat. Currently, I am Political Officer at the German Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya. The LLM program has broadened my view of many international legal and political topics, which was of great help when I applied to become a diplomat.
The LLM program in Nottingham offered a great opportunity to study in an intriguing environment; meet interesting and fun people from many other countries and to take part in Nottingham student life - for me that was becoming a member of the university's rowing team.
