LLM Public International Law

Slovenia

Class of 2005/06

When I arrived to Nottingham, I was already working on my doctorate in politics at the University of Salzburg, Austria. My intention was to improve my knowledge of international law in order to become a better researcher in the fields of politics and international relations. However, once I started attending the LLM options in Nottingham, I decided I would like to do more research in international law in the future and after I completed the LLM and the doctorate in politics, I stayed in Nottingham to pursue a PhD in international law. Now my research in primarily concerned with public international law and international law of human rights.

The possibility to specialize in the area of law in which I was most interested, the wide selection of options in public international law and human rights and the reputation of the lecturers and the School of Law were the decisive factors for my opting to study at Nottingham.

The LLM course gave me the specialised knowledge in international law which later enabled me to embark on my PhD research. The LLM at Nottingham was thus my bridge to legal academia. I am now an Anglo-German Fellow in the Institute of European and Comparative Law, Faculty of Law, University of Oxford.

I came to Nottingham knowing that I wanted to pursue an academic career. But most of my friends from the LLM year did not go into academia and now work for governments, international organisations, NGOs or as practicing lawyers.
