LLM International Commercial Law

Class of 2007/08

When I was about to finish my Bachelors Degree in Law in 2003, I joined Bahar & Partners, one of the leading law firms in Jakarta, Indonesia. During my office term, I practiced in the areas of merger & acquisition laws and foreign investment & trade laws with numerous experiences in cross-border transactional matters; among others bond issuances, debt and corporate restructuring for various companies, mergers & acquisitions, privatization and divestment programs, capital market as well as corporate finance transactions.

After working for almost three and half years, the firm requested me to pursue a higher degree and provided me with a scholarship based on my excellent working performance. In response to such a request, I looked for a postgraduate degree related to business and commercial law. The one at the University of Nottingham was the one that suited me best. I chose the University of Nottingham as it offers a top-class academic atmosphere and excellent library resources. The postgraduate program in International Commercial Law represents one of the largest coursework offerings in the United Kingdom. I found that it caters for a wide range of student backgrounds, and attracts applicants from around the world. I was informed that their devoted lecturers and staffs have very broad research and teaching interests, and write major business, commercial and maritime journals and book series.

The course was very interesting. I learned about issues that are seen in only a superficial way at the undergraduate level. The resources for law study in the University are very good. The induction program for new students is very helpful too. I enjoyed the Law Faculty very much and I love the people that I work with as I have received excellent support and encouragement from them.

After I finished my postgraduate study in 2008, I continue working with Bahar & Partners. At the beginning of 2010, I was promoted to become a Partner of the firm. I believe that my studying experience in University of Nottingham is very valuable for current and future employment. It has been a good opportunity to develop not only my technical expertise, but also management skills within a firm framework.

Currently, I specialize in and act as a partner-in-charge in the practice areas of Investment & Natural Resources, as well as Securities, Banking & Finance. I have had extensive experiences in advising foreign and domestic companies, among others, with regards to general corporate and commercial matters, such as foreign investment in Indonesia, share sales & purchase, and other corporate transactions including the operational aspects, licensing and employment legal issues.

I am also an active speaker in various seminars and workshops, among others the workshop on Contract Drafting Strategy used in Mining Industry, at Mulia Hotel, Jakarta, the workshop on Legal Audit Technique designed for Coal Mining Company at Le Meridien Hotel, Jakarta, and the workshop on Legal Contract Drafting at University of Indonesia. In addition, I also actively attended various training programs and seminars in the area of mining, cross border M&A, joint venture, financing, and capital market.
