FAQs

The following are intended to help to answer standard queries you may have before, during and after applying for one of our PhD Programmes.  We are always happy to answer additional questions you may have.  We aim to respond to your enquiries within 48 hours.

What documents do I need to supply with my application?

To apply for a PhD you need to provide the following documentation:

1) Undergraduate Transcript

2) Postgraduate Transcript

3) Research Proposal

4) 2 x Academic References

5) English Language Certificate: IELTS/TOEFL (if appropriate)

Can I apply online?
You can apply online using the Postgraduate Online Applications Portal

What are the conditions for a paid PhD position?
There are Scholarships that can be applied for.  If you would like to be considered for a Scholarship/studentship you need to specify this on your application form.  You can apply for a University Scholarship or apply for a scholarhsip from the School of Law

Can I start a PhD Programme in January (2nd Semester)?
Yes, we can consider PhD students to start the programme until 30 January in an academic year.

Is there a strict deadline for the applications?
Applications should be sent in as soon as possible; on the other hand there is no strict deadline and we do consider applications throughout the year.  However, it is important to note that individuals wanting to be considered for School of Law scholarships should ensure they have their application and supporting documents to us by 31 January.  Scholarships offered by the International Office may have different deadlines to this.

Does the University offer assistance to find funds for the PhD programmes?
The University has opportunities to secure Studentships and Scholarships; however, applicants are expected to find and apply for most scholarships themselves.

Can I conduct the research away from the University? If yes, in what conditions?
It is only in extremely rare cases that a student is permitted to do a PhD without being resident in Nottingham.  Unfortunately, it is not really possible to answer this question until we have a full application and have considered all the options.

I want to do my PhD in “....”. Is there anyone else who is working on the same topic?

You can see which staff have a similar research interest to you.  Or you can read the current research students's profiles.

If you have any further queries please feel free to contact either Jo Bailey or Danielle Sinclair, Postgraduate Programmes Administrators
