Careers

The School of Law has excellent links with employers from the legal profession and elsewhere. The Careers and Employability Service organises legal firm presentations and the annual law fair, one of the largest fairs of its kind in the country. These are attended by:

  • leading firms of solicitors (international, city, national and regional)
  • the Government Legal Service
  • the Crown Prosecution Service
  • barrister's chambers
  • legal education providers.

Graduates

Graduates of Nottingham University Law School are highly sought after by major legal and non-legal recruiters. Legal and non-legal employers regularly present recruitment activities on campus in which they run a range of activities such as:

  • graduate employment presentations
  • professional skills training workshops
  • information drop-in sessions
  • hints and tips on application form filling
  • interview training for students.

In addition, the Careers and Employability Service offers career guidance, advice and information enabling students to successfully participate in the legal and non-legal recruitment markets.

Career Choices

A high proportion of students choose a legal career and progress into training for the professional qualifications of solicitor (Legal Practice Course) or barrister (Bar Professional Training Course). Those students who decide that a legal career is not for them go directly into employment in areas such as:

  • accountancy
  • investment banking
  • public relations
  • general management
  • civil service
  • local government
  • management consultancy.

Some decide to undertake postgraduate degrees ranging from Human Rights Law, International Business Law, and Philosophy.

Some information on Graduate Destinations can be found here.

Students are kept fully informed of the legal and non-legal recruitment market. Students are actively encouraged to manage their career research with support from the Careers and Employability Service.

Support From the Legal Profession

As well as holding presentations and training workshops for the students, many firms and barristers chambers provide additional support to the School.  This support is provided in a variety of ways:

  • supporting student events through the various student societies
  • sponsoring of scholarships and prizes
  • the provision of facilities and resources such as the Slaughter & May Computer Room.

Many firms and chambers also become involved in the School’s Skillegal programme, a scheme designed to introduce students to the skills they will need to be effective lawyers.

Partners

The School enjoys an excellent relationship with members of the legal profession and is pleased to acknowledge the invaluable support of the following firms and chambers:
