Student Societies

The School of Law is home to five individual societies, catering for a wide variety of activities that are of interest to undergraduate law students. All of these societies are run by current students from the School, elected to committee by their fellow students.

The Law Society

The Law Society is very active in the School of Law, running numerous events throughout the academic year.  These include:

  • social functions -  such as the ‘adoption party’ at the start of the year, giving first year students the chance to meet their fellow law students from all years, two Law Balls, one at Christmas and one in the spring
  • sporting events - law teams compete against other schools and teams from halls of residence and against teams from law firms
  • second hand book sale -  allowing students to buy many of the recommended texts at a fraction of the price
  • invited speakers - law firms are invited to make presentations or hold workshops with students, together with representatives from universities offering their LPC or BPTC programmes.

Advocate

Advocate is the Law Students' Magazine, published each semester and distributed free of charge to both staff and students in the School of Law.

Advocate is a showcase for the writing talents of students; the magazine includes a wide variety of articles, from the serious to the light-hearted.  The Advocate committee invites all students to participate; if you have anything to say on absolutely anything then Advocate is the place to say it.

Pro Bono Society

Pro Bono is the provision of professional work undertaken voluntarily and without payment.  The society runs a variety of projects within the local community which students are encouraged to take part in.  The main projects include:

  • OUTlaw - giving presentations and mock interviews to secondary age students who are considering applying for law.
  • Aspire - running interactive workshops to primary age children offering a basic introduction to law.
  • Refugee Forum - volunteering at the forum, including shadowing the advisors who give advice on debt, benefits, housing, and other issues.

In addition, the Pro Bono Society works with local Nottingham charity, Young Potential, to assist with community projects and are currently looking to set up their own legal advice clinic.

Internally, the Society runs the Negotiation Competition and the Vacation Scheme Workshops, as well as organising key speakers from the legal profession to visit the School.

Mooting Society

The Mooting Association organises a number of Moots (mock trials/legal debates) throughout the academic year.  There are two internal competitions, one for first years and one for second and final year.  They also compete in and host a number of events against other universities in national competitions.

The internal competitions are open to all interested law students while the best competitors are chosen by the Mooting Association Committee to compete in the national competitions.

Bar Society

The Bar Society, is a society established in 2007/2008 to represent all students interested in finding out more about becoming barristers.

The Bar Society provides support via e-mail and drop-in sessions, a number of talks throughout the year outlining subjects from life at the bar to obtaining pupillage and they organise trips/tours to the Inns of Court and student dining sessions.
