Catalogue conversion (Manuscripts)

A major challenge facing most libraries and archives is the need to convert to electronic form all the finding aids and catalogues which were created in the course of the last 50 years. With web delivery becoming for many readers the preferred form of access, this challenge has in recent years received priority attention. It will be many years before it is fully met.

The results of progress to date can be seen through the Manuscripts Online Catalogue. Searches of the catalogue identify many resources which still have only a collection level description. This does not in all cases mean that a further catalogue is not available; readers should check statements in the description about finding aids to see whether catalogues exist in hard copy form or can be accessed in other ways.

In the conversion of earlier finding aids, it is usually desirable to upgrade the content, to bring the data in line with current standards of description and to ensure the consistency which enables cross-searching of related resources. With many of the projects undertaken in recent years, such upgrading has led to the creation of extensive indexes. In other cases, in the interests of rapid progress and an immediate benefit, early catalogues have been converted in their original form. These catalogues may be the subject of further improvement as opportunity and resources permit.

Some of the projects which will bring improvements in catalogue access are undertaken by staff in the course of regular programmes of work. Readers are advised to contact staff in Manuscripts and Special Collections for further information about the catalogue status of any collection which they wish to access.
