General Special Collection
Particular criteria determine which library holdings should be included in the General Special Collections series.
The most important are age and rarity of a book. The collection grows steadily. It continues to absorb transfers from other library branches, but is now added to mainly by donation and purchase, particularly if material is offered which appears to fill a gap or build on an existing strength.
When the series was first established, the Department's location within Hallward Library led it to focus exclusively on the arts, humanities and education, subject areas which were catered for in the rest of the building. The recent inclusion of named Special Collections from Medicine, Law, Agriculture, and Science has extended the Department's collecting remit to include material from all disciplines.
