Biography of Sir Gervase Eyre (d 1645)

Gervase Eyre was the eldest son of Anthony Eyre

Esq., of Laughton en le Morthen and Kiveton, Yorkshire, and Newbold, Derbyshire, by his first wife Anne Markham. His father's second marriage was to the widow of John Babington of Rampton. Gervase himself married John's Babington's younger daughter Elizabeth.

A moiety of the manor of Rampton came to Gervase from his father, who had acquired it from Mary Babington. Gervase purchased the other moiety from his wife's elder sister Barbara and began to use Rampton as the Eyre family's principal residence, selling his estates at Kiveton and Newbold.

He died at the seige of Newark during the Civil War while fighting for the King. 

Family

He married in 1624 Elizabeth (b 1607), younger daughter of John Babington Esq. of Rampton, and had:

  • Anthony (1632-1633)
  • Anthony (1634-1671)
  • Gervase (1638-1640)
  • Mary (b 1628), m Sir John Newton
  • Barbara (1633-1634)
  • Anne (b 1640)

Elizabeth married 2ndly William More D.D.
