£1 million received to nurture a new generation of researchers

The Leverhulme Trust Board have announced the fourteen winners of its new Doctoral Scholarships Scheme. Each £1 million grant will fund fifteen PhD students working across the whole range of the sciences, humanities and social sciences, on topics as diverse as understanding maritime futures, climate justice, genetics journeys into history and mathematics for a sustainable society.

We are extremely pleased that Professor of Mathematical Biology, Markus Owen and team have been successful in securing one of these highly competitive grants.

"Mathematics for a Sustainable Society" will involve inter-disciplinary projects with other Schools and Faculties, including Social Sciences, Engineering, and Medical and Health Sciences, and it means that we can welcome fifteen new researchers into the School. Applications to the programme are now welcome.

The projects will be based on the challenges of resource sustainability as society faces an on-going problem of food shortages and water scarcity. Mathematics can play a crucial role in helping to understand and optimise resource use by quantifying and predicting the effects of alternative approaches and interventions.
The Leverhulme Trust explains that the scheme is motivated by the concern that increased indebtedness may discourage graduates from undertaking a doctorate, this new initiative aims to nurture future generations of aspiring researchers by supporting doctoral studies in UK universities.
Well done to Markus and all of the team!
