About TIPS
The two-day Nottingham Medical School TIPS course has now been running for twelve years and has trained over 950 members of academic and NHS staff in basic teaching skills. The course is an intensive 2-day workshop, usually for 12 participants. Although it teaches generic skills the course is orientated towards health professionals and uses bio-medical and clinical examples. It includes the following sessions:
- Theories of learning
- Using Learning Objectives
- Using questioning techniques
- Structuring learning episodes
- Microteaching (1) with group & individual feedback
- Teaching methods
- Evaluating teaching
- Assessing learning
- Microteaching (2) with group & individual feedback
The course uses a variety of teaching techniques:
- formal teaching & small group discussions
- active group work
- analysing and discussing teaching videos
- practising teaching skills & individual presentations
- evaluating ones own and others teaching
- receiving and discussing feedback on teaching & giving feedback to others
Upon completion of the two-day course participants should have the knowledge and skills enabling them to:
- Differentiate between teacher-centred teaching and student-centred learning.
- Formulate learning objectives within the domains of knowledge, skills and attitudes appropriate to students at different stages.
- Plan and organise a presentation.
- Apply presentation techniques.
- Formulate questions which promote thinking and active learning.
- Use stimulating teaching methods which encourage active learning.
- Analyse teaching using a check-list.
- Assess student learning.
- Evaluate ones own and others teaching behaviours.
- Give constructive and sensitive feedback to another teacher
- Participate in Peer Evaluation teaching schemes.
