Preparation

Preparation

Below is some information about preparing yourself for the TIPS course, in particular for the two 10-minute microteaching presentations you are asked to make.

Preparing for your microteaching sessions

The purpose of microteaching is to enhance your skills as a teacher by analysing, practising and evaluating teaching techniques which help learning in your students. To enable you to achieve this you need to prepare yourself in the manner described below.

On the first day you will present a 10-minute 'microteach' to the rest of the group, (usually about 11 other people). You will need to prepare resources for your teaching session e.g. overheads, slides, video, PowerPoint, demonstration equipment etc. before the first day of the course. You need to select resources for a short topic, concept or skill that can be readily taught in ten minutes of real time - do not try to cram the contents of a full lecture into the time available! Please choose something from your normal area of teaching that you are familiar and comfortable with. Please don't present research findings in a scientific conference format. Evaluation of your microteaching will be carried out by your peers using a checklist and there will opportunities for group feedback. In addition the facilitator will also give an evaluation.

On the second day you will present another 10-minute microteach to the rest of the group. However this time you will talk about a topic unrelated to your work. Frequently participants introduce the group to a hobby or pastime, or some other activity which interests them. The range is as wide as you choose to make it. As in the first day, you will need to select appropriate resources, whether these be visual aids, PowerPoint slides, overhead projector slides, artefacts or whatever. This second presentation will also be evaluated by your peers and by the facilitator.

Possible Academic Accreditation

In response to participant interest, it is intended that, subject to validation and the successful completion of a reflective account on your two presentations, participants will be able to gain 10 CATS points at M-level which can then be used towards the degree of MMedSci [Clinical education]. Details will be given at TIPS sessions.
