Biography

The role and effect of the endocrine system on brown adipose tissue function and development

Supervisors: Professor Helen Budge, Professor Michael Symonds

I am interested in the interactions between the endocrine system and brown adipose tissue. Brown adipose tissue is a core component of non-shivering thermogenesis, the body's ability to produce heat without shivering. As such, it may represent a novel target for weight management interventions, as well as improving glucose homeostasis.

I am looking at brown adipose tissue activation in children with diabetes or thyroid dysfunction to investigate the effect of disruption in these components of the endocrine system on brown adipose tissue function in vivo. Going forward I plan to develop brown adipocyte cell lines to investigate the cellular physiology underpinning these changes and to elicit potential brown adipose tissue stimulators.
