What we do

Welcome from Professor John Alcolado, Head of Division:

The University of Nottingham prides itself on being at the forefront of research, innovation and education in medicine, human physiology and medical sciences. We work closely with our partners in the NHS, other health-care providers, and the pharmaceutical industry, both in the UK and overseas, to deliver high-impact advances that change human lives for the better.

Our division is the largest in the School of Medicine. We balance internationally-acclaimed research with high-quality teaching and nurture the next generation of doctors and scientists. Our Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) programme allows people from a wide diversity of backgrounds to become Foundation Year doctors within 4-years.  In addition we host the first year of a 6-year undergraduate programme specifically designed to open up medicine to students from under-represented groups. Our BSc in Medical Physiology & Therapeutics provides a route for students who wish to study alongside Graduate Entry Medicine students. Graduates from this course pursue a wide-range of careers, including research, biotechnology and medicine.

There is an emphasis on clinical and translational research, spanning molecular mechanisms through to clinical trials. Active research areas in our division include human ageing, muscle physiology, nephrology, endocrinology, vascular medicine, women’s health, paediatrics and surgery. Above all, we are motivated by a culture where all our students and staff are supported to develop to their greatest potential.
