Expertise Summary

I am interested in the interaction between diet and digestion. Clinically this encompasses maldigestion and malabsorption, the consequences of which include distressing gastrointestinal symptoms but also malnutrition. My work so far has focused on the effects of maldigested carbohydrates, including fibres. As part of the Gastrointestinal MRI group I use non-invasive imaging to quantify intra-luminal content such as water and gas. We also develop new parameters to characterise physiological changes in the gut. Collaborations with microbiology allow the effects of dietary intervention on the microbiome to be interpret in light of upstream physiology.

Future projects will investigate fat malabsorption and water balance in the context of high stoma output. I also plan collaboration with nutritional and metabolic physiology so that altered digestion and its nutritional effects can be studied in concert.

Recent Publications

Current Research

I am interested in the interaction between diet, the gut microbiota and intestinal physiology, and how these interactions affect digestive symptoms and disease. I am part of the University of Nottingham GI MRI research group. We use novel magnetic resonance imaging techniques and applications to investigate gut physiology without disturbing the underlying symptoms.

I also collaborate with microbiologist in the university and the NHS services to study the effect of diet and infection on the microbiota. The aim of this work is to design strategies to prevent pathogenic depletion of the microbiota and promote rapid recovery after any insult. I am currently Joint Chief Investigator on the RAPID trial, an RfPB funded multi-centre RCT of the efficacy of rifaximin, a non-absorbable antibiotic, in preventing recurrnce of r C.difficile associated diarrhoea.
