We are a vibrant division comprising three integrated departments: Academic Rheumatology (City Hospital), Orthopaedics Trauma and Sports Medicine (Queen’s Medical Centre), and the Centre for Evidence Based Dermatology (King’s Meadow campus).

What we do

From Professor Mike Doherty, Head of Division:

In line with the School of Medicine, the mission of the division is to improve health and quality of life through outstanding medical education, research and patient care in the areas of joint, bone and skin disease. 

We undertake both primary research and secondary research evidence synthesis. Two ARUK Centres of Excellence are based in the division. We are also actively engaged in undergraduate and post-graduate education and undertake a wide range of research.

We work closely with other departments in the University and University Hospitals NHS Trust, as well as patients and members of the public.



Research includes basic laboratory research; primary clinical, epidemiological and genetics research; clinical trials; and evidence based medicine research synthesis. Learn more about work through the following research groups:
