Daren Forward

Biography

Mr. Daren P Forward is a full-time NHS consultant and has a practice that exclusively deals with trauma. He works at the University Hospital, Nottingham, which is the busiest trauma unit in England. The hospital treats 16,000 patients with new fractures each year and 50,000 trauma outpatient reviews are undertaken. Mr. Forward is on-call for emergencies at frequent intervals and is a member of the trauma team. His practice includes routine trauma operating lists and fracture clinics each week. He undertook fellowship training at the Baltimore Shock Trauma unit, generally acknowledged as one of the leading trauma centres in the world, and has expertise in the management of patients with severe multiple injuries and has a tertiary referral practice for patients with pelvic and acetabular fractures, complex joint injuries, and fractures that have failed to heal (non-unions).

Mr. Forward qualified from Oxford University Medical School in 1997 before commencing basic surgical training in Nottingham. He remained in Nottingham as a specialist registrar, including training in the Centre for Spinal Studies and Surgery, and completed his training as a fellow at the Shock Trauma Centre and Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, USA. He was also a research fellow at the University of Nottingham, completing a Doctor of Medicine thesis on the long term outcome of fractures of the distal radius.

Since 2009, Mr. Forward has been a consultant in orthopaedic trauma at the University Hospital, Nottingham. In addition to his bachelor's degree in medicine and surgery, Mr. Forward has a master's degree in physiological sciences and a doctorate of medicine, and is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He is a member of the British Orthopaedic Association, the Orthopedic Trauma Association of North America, and the Nottinghamshire medico-legal society. Mr. Forward has acted as an advisor to NCEPOD, and has represented the British Orthopaedic Association in writing guidelines for emergency surgery with the Royal College of Surgeons.

His research portfolio includes 40 published scientific papers and abstracts, mainly in the field of trauma, and he has authored textbook chapters on trauma. He continues to be active in research in this field. He lectures on trauma, and is a peer reviewer for the journal, Injury. Mr. Forward is an experienced teacher on national and international courses on the treatment of trauma, and was appointed as an Honorary Consultant Lecturer at the University of Nottingham in March 2012.
