Selected Publications

I am the co-ordinator of all aspects of BMedSci undergraduate research students associated with the School of Graduate Entry Medicine and Health. Leadership of the BMedSci students involves organising project proposals and project allocations, and ensuring projects run smoothly via progress meetings and being a general point of contact for student.

I am the Module convenor of A12C1G (Cardiovascular Sciences), A13CPH/CES (Cannabinoid Pharmacology) and A13RDM (Research Methods). I deliver content on A12RIG (Respiratory Sciences), A13CPH (Cannabinoid Pharmacology) and A13RDM (Research Methods) and A13REM (Research Methods). I supervise between 2 and 5 undergraduate students (BMedSci and BSc) in the final year research projects.

I am a personal tutor for GEM students (currently 9 for 2011/2012) and BSc in Medical Physiology and Therapeutics students (currently 13 for 2011/2012). This involves a compulsory meeting once per term (two in the first term) with each student, and any others required by the tutee. I am also Year tutor for the final year BSc students in Medical Physiology and Therapeutics.

Current Research

Dr O'Sullivan's research interests are primarily in investigating the role of the endocannabinoid system in the vasculature in health and disease (funded by the BHF, FS/09/007), and in investigating the potential of cannabis-based medicine in vascular dysfunction (funded by Diabetes UK 08/0003822 and GW Pharmaceuticals), focused on Diabetes and obesity. This has involved a combination of cellular experiments, tissue experiments (primarily using myography on human tissue), preclinical rodent studies, in vivo investigator led studies in healthy volunteers and phase 2 clinical trials. She also explores the impact of chronic kidney disease, obesity and diabetes on vascular function, using human samples obtained through various surgeries at the Royal Derby Hospital. Dr O'Sullivan is also investigates blood brain barrier function and permeability. Laboratory techniques include cellular work with a variety of human vascular cells, myography on human arteries (subcutaneous, omental, mesenteric), multiplex technology, ELISAs, and non-invasive cardiovascular measurements
